On PCs that access LIMS better disable caching of webpages

that is set your browser option to always refresh the content of revisited web site.

Internet browsers are set to store web pages by default. That means they stockpile copies of web pages you visit so that the next time you view one of these pages, it will appear faster than if your browser has to fetch it over from the server. But caching is a problem for LIMS and other applications that require confidentiality. The way to disable page caching is different in each browser.

Disable caching in Internet Explorer

To configure Internet Explorer to not cache web pages, click on "Tools" in the menu bar, then on "Internet Options". A box will pop up with a number of tabs -- click on the "General" tab. You will see a section on this sheet called "Temporary Internet Files" with a number of buttons, including "Delete Cookies", "Delete Files", and "Settings". Click on the "Settings" button, and a new box will pop up with a number of adjustable settings. Where it says "Check for newer versions of stored pages", select the option labeled "Every time I visit the webpage". Now press "Save" to exit all the pop up windows. MS Internet Explorer is now set to download the web pages every time you visit them.

Mozilla Firefox

In the Location bar (where you sometimes type an URL address) , type about:config, and press Enter key. The warning will appear: "The about:config "This might void your warranty!". Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page. The about:config page should appear. Double click on the following lines:
  • browser.cache.disk.enable;true
  • browser.cache.memory.enable;true
  • browser.cache.offline.enable;true
Mozilla Firefox is now set to download the web pages every time you visit them.

Netscape

To configure Netscape to not cache web pages, click on "Edit" in the menu bar, then on "Preferences". A box will pop up with a number of categories on the left, and a number of settings you can change on the right. Click on the category named "Advanced" (in Netscape 6 you might have to double click on it). A number of options will open up below "Advanced" -- choose the option labeled "Cache". Where it says "Document in cache is compared to document on network", select the option labeled "Every time". Now press "Save" to exit all the pop-up windows. Netscape is now set to download the web pages every time you visit them.
