Laser Protective Lenses

The damages done to our hearing can be easily assessed. Sweeping audible sound across the entire nominal spectrum and asking questions to the person under examination is commonly used to obtain a graph that shows sensitivity of the ear. This graph is called an audiogram. The damage to the retina of human eye is many fold more difficult to measure.
First of all, hearing measurements are limited to performing a frequency sweep at two points (left ear and right ear). When attempting to design a similar assessment for vision one needs to perform measurement in two dimensions ( height and width of the retina). What needs to be decided is the number of points in each dimension. There is not much research available to help make the decision about the resolution required to produce a map of sensitivity of the retina. In fact, the second decision about resolution needs to be made with respect of number of colors that are used in the assessment process. Every color will result in the 3D graph with sensitivity as the dependent variable plotted versus the 2D coordinates. Finally, the measurement itself is very difficult to achieve one of the reasons being that humans do not keep their eyes still.
The bottom line is that an individual is bound to have difficulty in noticing that his or her vision has been damaged by laser and exhibits reduced sensitivity in a particular light wavelength. Therefore, we do not hesitate to recommend preventive gear, such as goggles in the table above, for individuals exposed repetitively to laser light even if the power of the laser is below levels that trigger regulatory requirements for vision protection.
The need for such protection can be suggested to workers of laser tag entertainment centers, doctors performing Lasik eye surgery procedures, workers in assembly or research facilities where structured illumination with laser light is used.
